Air Freight

Express air freight to Buenos Aires for cargo that cannot wait for the next sailing.

What is included

Air freight gets cargo from China to Buenos Aires in 5-7 days, roughly a fifth of the sea transit time. It only makes economic sense on a narrow band of shipments: high value per kilogram, short shelf life, production-stopping spare parts, or a launch date that cannot slip. For dense, low-value cargo air is several times the cost of sea and that gap does not close.

The number that decides your invoice is chargeable weight, not actual weight. Airlines charge on whichever is greater: the real kilos, or the volume divided by 6,000 cubic centimetres per kilo. Light, bulky cargo is therefore charged as if it were much heavier than it is — a pallet of finished cartons can bill at three or four times its physical weight.

  • Express and standard air options
  • Consolidated and direct uplift
  • Suitable for electronics, spare parts and samples
  • Customs entry coordinated on arrival

Best for: high-value, low-weight or time-critical cargo.

Express versus consolidated air

Consolidated air is the standard commercial option: your cargo joins a master air waybill with other shippers’ freight and is charged per chargeable kilo. Express services move faster and take cargo later in the day, at a premium. Direct uplift on a freighter avoids the hub stop but is only realistic for volume that can fill a pallet position.

  • Consolidated — best cost per kilo, one to two extra days at the hub
  • Direct — no transshipment, needs enough volume to justify it
  • Express — latest cut-off, highest per-kilo rate
  • Door-to-door available on all three via EZE

What can and cannot fly

Passenger and freighter aircraft both have restrictions that sea freight does not. Lithium batteries, aerosols, magnets, liquids and powders need documentation and sometimes a different service level. Anything with a battery inside — power banks, cordless tools, e-scooters — must be declared as such, because mis-declared batteries are the single most common reason a shipment is rejected at the Chinese hub.

  • Lithium batteries — declared, with MSDS and UN38.3 test report
  • Magnets — shielded and declared, otherwise rejected at screening
  • Liquids and powders — restricted, need carrier approval
  • Perishables — only with a validated cold-chain booking

Cut-off, screening and the realistic door date

The quoted transit time starts when the aircraft departs, not when you book. Cargo must be delivered to the Chinese terminal, screened and manifested before that. In practice, allow three to four working days from pickup at your supplier to wheels-up, and then the flight time plus Argentine clearance. That is why a 5-7 day air transit usually lands as 8-11 days door to door.

  • Pickup at supplier and inland haul to the airport
  • Security screening and customs export declaration
  • Flight to EZE, typically one hub stop
  • Import clearance plus delivery within Argentina

When air beats sea on total cost

Air looks expensive per kilo but it can win on total landed cost once inventory carrying cost, tied-up working capital and lost sales are counted. If a container of goods sits on the water for six weeks, that capital is idle and the shelf is empty. Air freight is also the only sensible option when a production line is stopped by a missing part or when a retail launch date is fixed.

  • High value density — electronics, precision parts, branded goods
  • Production-critical spares where downtime costs more than freight
  • Fixed launch or contractual delivery dates
  • Samples and pre-production approvals

Air Freight: frequently asked questions

How long does air freight from China to Argentina take?

Five to seven days airborne to Buenos Aires, and typically eight to eleven days door to door once pickup, screening, export declaration, Argentine clearance and final delivery are added. The published transit time starts at wheels-up, not at booking.

How is air freight charged?

On chargeable weight, which is the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length times width times height in centimetres divided by 6,000. A light, bulky shipment therefore bills well above its physical weight, which is why air rarely suits low-density cargo.

Can you ship lithium batteries or products containing them?

Yes, with proper documentation: a safety data sheet, a UN38.3 test report and correct declaration on the air waybill. Batteries that are mis-declared are the most common cause of rejection at the Chinese hub, so we collect the paperwork before booking rather than at the screening desk.

Is air freight cheaper than sea for small shipments?

Sometimes. Below roughly 100-300 kg of high-value cargo, air can be cheaper once you count the inventory carrying cost and the six weeks of sea transit you avoid. For dense, low-value goods sea is still far cheaper per kilo, and the gap widens as volume grows.

Which Argentine airport do you use?

Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) handles the overwhelming majority of commercial air cargo into Argentina. Onward delivery from EZE to Rosario, Córdoba or the interior is by truck and is included in a door-to-door quote.
